Greetings in the name of the Lord!!!!!
As you may already know, Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church was established as the first,
Black Episcopal Church in the greater New Haven area in 1844. There were various
struggles to establish the church but with perseverance by our forefathers and
assistance from Trinity Church we established our current place of worship on Whalley
Avenue in 1904. The State Of Connecticut has designated our church as an historical
site and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
During its history, Saint Luke’s has been good to our families and the community
serving both our spiritual and physical needs. Now it is time to give back and ensure
that this beautiful place of worship exists for another 102 years.
We are embarking on major renovations at Saint Luke’s in order to maintain our
beautiful church and its historical status. We received your name from Gloria Williams
as a friend of Saint Luke’s and someone who would be interested in contributing
financial support to the church’s effort. Listed below in order of priority are the areas
that are in dire need of repair:
Roof (slate) and bell tower replacement $ 300,000
Parish Hall Roof $ 30,000
Restoration of Stained Glass Windows $ 160,000
Furnace (2) $ 25,000
Elevator/Lift $ 50,000
As you can see these are costly undertakings, totaling over $550,000. To begin the
process of roof replacement, we have secured approximately $200,000 through the
sale of property; however, this is not enough to complete all the needed repairs and
restoration. We need your assistance in securing the balance of the needed funds.
You can make your tax-exempt donation (Check or Money Order) payable to Building

Parishioners (families), friends and businesses can make pledges in the following
categories:
$5,000 or more Legacy Level
$3,000 to $4,999 Gold Level
$1,000 to $2,999 Silver Level
$ 1 to $999 Bronze Level
Pledges can be paid in monthly installments over a one year period. (All pledges are
tax deductible). Pledges can also be given in memory of a loved one.
As always, we appreciate your support of Saint Luke’s and will gratefully accept
whatever you are blessed to contribute to the Building Fund. Please remember: “the
one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will
also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver….You will be enriched
in every way for your generosity which will produce thanksgiving to God through us…”
(2 Corinthians 6-7, 11)
